Reverend Clifford Respress, Jr.

Reverend Clifford Respress, Jr. died Sunday, June 25, 2011. He was born in Crawford County on December 13, 1935 to the late Mrs. Dora Mae Dotson Respress and the late Mr. Clifford Respress, Sr.

He attended school at Shady Grove. He was a member of Springfield Baptist and was a long time employee of the Coca Cola Company. Rev. Respress pastored several churches including: Springhill Community Baptist Churches (18 Years); Midway Baptist Church (15 Years); Fellowship Baptist Church (13 Years);and Demascus Baptist Church (Over 10 Years), he retired in 2003.

He was a member of the Upson County Ministerial Association of the Upson County Ministers Union, a member of the NAACP and elected to serve as President in 1995. A member of the Thomaston-Upson County Concerned Citizens Coalition, Upson County Chapter of the American Red Cross, a member of the Emancipation Proclamation Committee, American Association of Retired Persons, Dumas Lodge No.225 and a board member of Habitat for Humanity.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alene Respress of Thomaston; sons: Mr. Bobby (Shirley) Respress, Mr. Robert Respress, both of Thomaston, and Mr. Larry (Bertha) Respress of Columbus; daughter, Ms. Patricia Respress of Thomaston; step-children include: Mr. Arthur (Janice) Quiller, Mrs. Carolyn Powell, Mr. Willie (Debbie ) Quiller, Mr. Tony (Ann) Quiller and Mrs. Elaine Adams, all of Thomaston; granddaughter Ms. Twanna "Kale" Quiller of Thomaston.

Nineteen grandchildren and twenty four great grandchildren.

Mr. Robert Earl Dunnahoo age 59 of Thomaston died June 28, 2011 at the Medical Center of Central Ga.

Mr. Dunnahoo was born on May 13, 1952 in Thomaston to Robert and the late Vada Dunnahoo. He was employed with the Upson County Recreation Department where he worked as a grounds keeper for many years.

Mr. Luther Woodrow Smith, 95 of Griffin, formerly of Thomaston died June 25, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. Smith was born on May 1, 1916 in Conyers Georgia, to the late Claude and Avery Smith. He was employed with Thomaston Mills where he worked as a machinist for 30 years. Mr. Smith attended Living Waters Church in Griffin. He is preceded in death by his daughter Mrs. Nellie "Doody" Lumpkin.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Elizabeth Kelley Smith of Griffin; daughters Mrs. Gail and Gerald Thomas of Savannah, Mrs. Sharon Paterson of Thomaston; step children Mr. Steve and Ann Buchanan, Mrs. Betty Jo and Richard Betz of Griffin; brother Mr. Robert and Joann Smith of Thomaston; 14 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; 3 Great Great Grandchildren.

Mrs. Dorothy Ragan Reeves age 82 formerly of Thomaston died June 23, 2011 at her sons residence in Omaha Texas.

Mrs. Reeves was born on September 3, 1928 in Zebulon, to the late Malcolm and Mary Ragan. She was employed with the William Carter Company for 30 years. Mrs. Reeves was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.

In Lieu of Flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Thomaston Hospice.

Mrs. Chapman was born on June 27, 1926 in Brooks County to the late James and Lizzie Taylor. She was employed with Thomaston Mills Bleachery division where she worked for 39 years.

Survivors include her son and daughter in law Mr. William Rudolph and Vicki Rozier of Thomaston, brother Mr. Donald Taylor of Quitman, Georgia, sister Mrs. Verlon and Otis Wilson of Warner Robins, Georgia.

Mr. Leon Watkins

Mr. Leon Gordon Watkins age 75 of Thomaston died June 22, 2011 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

Mr. Watkins was born on May 24, 1936 in Blackshear Georgia, to the late Luther and Mary Mae Watkins. He was employed with the City of Thomaston for many years. Mr. Watkins was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army for several years.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Freida Watkins of Thomaston Georgia, daughters Mrs. Lanell and Darwin Golden of Thomaston Georgia, Mrs. Tammy and John Evanchik of Jacksonville Florida, sons Mr. Terry and Jennifer Watkins of Barnesville Georgia, Mr. Kim and Bonnie Watkins of Thomaston Ga. 11 Grandchildren. 2 Great Grandchildren.

Margaret Riviere

Mrs. Riviere was born in Upson County, a daughter of the late J. B. Hardy and Lucile Blackburn Hardy.

She obtained her private pilot's license in Griffin in the early 1940s. In 1942 the U. S. Army Air Force formed the Women's Air Force Service Pilots, or WASPs. Mrs. Riviere applied and was accepted into the program, which trained and utilized women to fly non-combat missions in the United States during World War II. In 2009 Mrs. Riviere received a Congressional Gold Medal for her service.

Mrs. Riviere had lived in Barnesville since 1947 and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnesville.

Mrs. Riviere is survived by a niece, Virginia Massing of Rome; two nephews, Tom Hardy Massing of Rockton, IL and Tony Douglas Massing of Cartersville; and a sister-in-law, Christine Goodenough of Woodbury.

Mrs. Marianne Savage Walter, age 63, of Griffin, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Atlanta Medical Center.

Mrs. Walter was born on March 9, 1948, in Upson County, daughter of the late John F. Savage, Sr. and the late Mary Alice Smith Savage. She was the owner of Busy Bee Day Care in Griffin. She was preceded in death by her son, Chris Wall.

Lucinda Nell (Cindy) Bowles

Miss Lucinda Nell (Cindy) Bowles died Tuesday, June 14th, 2011. She was a native of Upson County, born on December 24th, 1953.

Miss Bowles was a graduate of R. E. Lee Institute. She was also a graduate of Mercer University with a BA in Social Work and Gordon Junior College, with a RN (Registered Nurse) Degree. Miss Bowles was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She worked as a Registered Nurse before a 1988 accident which caused her disability.

Cindy is survived by: Her sister and brother-in-law, Loveanne and John Addison, of Clermont, Georgia;  2 Nephews - Kyle Addison, of Atlanta and Tyler, Addison, of Athens; Aunt and Uncle - Mr. and Mrs. Love A. Mallory, Jr., of Thomaston.

Mrs. Betty Jean McGouirk Neeley

Mrs. Betty Jean McGouirk Neeley, age 81, of Thomaston, died June 13, 2011.

Mrs. Neeley was born on February 21, 1939, in Talladega, Alabama, daughter of the late Dave and Alma Wright McGouirk. She was retired from Thomaston Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Neeley.

Survivors include her daughters and sons in law, Cindy and Larry Helms of Thomaston, Valerie and Robert Bunn of Jonesboro; sons and daughter in law, David Neeley of Thomaston, Mike and Kathy Neeley of Thomaston; sisters, Ruth Stewart of Meansville, Sue Raybon of Thomaston; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mary Ella McCard Smith

maryellamccardsmithMrs. Mary Ella McCard Smith passed away June 10, 2011 at Riverside Nursing Care.

Mrs. Smith was born to William "Buddy" and Mollie McCard June 9, 1923 in Thomaston.

She graduated from R.E. Lee Institute in 1941 where she played basketball. She joined the Woman Air Corps and was stationed in Orlando, Florida, where she met and married Merrill Edward Smith on March 3, 1945. Mrs. Smith worked in the Thomaston Mills for 20 years and at Martha Mills almost 15 years. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also raised thousands of laying hens and raised and sold guinea pigs for years. Mrs. Smith was Mrs. Riverside in 2009, and was chosen to be in the state pageant at Stone Mountain. She was of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by son, Russell and Nan Smith of Americus, daughter Elaine Scott of Thomaston, Diane and Billy Ward of Thomaston, grandchildren, Leslie and David Stevens of Thomaston, Andrea and Ron Kephart of New Braunsfel Texas, Michael and Keriko Ward of Tokyo Japan, Kelli and Russ Pennington of Atlanta, Kristi Smith of Warwick, Robyn Scott Watson of Melbourne Australia, Joey and Rebecca Smith of Suwanee, seven great grandchildren also survive, and a sister Mrs. Betty Sue Fowler of Louisville Kentucky.
